ROBERTA MESSNER, Huntington, West Virginia

Life during Covid-19 has made a lot of people short-tempered. I try to focus on the positives, such as the latte I buy myself as a little treat every day and Shea, the friendly barista who makes it just the way I like. So I was horrified when I saw the man ahead of me at the drive-through window berating her.

“I’ll be contacting your boss about this!” he shouted. “You’re incompetent!”

I’d been on the receiving end of a similar rant just days earlier. As I was standing in the grocery checkout line, minding my own business, the man in front of me whirled around and started yelling at me about some imagined offense.

I didn’t want to remember the words he used—certainly not the kind of language you’d expect to hear in a grocery store—but no matter how much I prayed about it, I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the incident. I knew just what that barista was feeling: fear, hurt, humiliation. I was still feeling those emotions myself.

The angry customer finally exited. Another employee took my order; Shea was nowhere in sight. That girl makes my day better every day, I thought as I drove off. Now her day has been ruined.

As soon as I got home, I called the coffee shop and asked for Shea.

“I’m Roberta, one of your regulars,” I told her. “I saw what happened today in the drive-through. I heard every word, and it wasn’t your fault. That guy was wrong.”

“Thank you,” Shea said. I could tell by the tremble in her voice that she’d been crying. “That means a lot.”

I was about to hang up when another thought struck me.

“Will you do me a favor, Shea?” I said. “Promise me you won’t spend another moment of your dear life thinking about him.”

Shea’s sniffle turned into a laugh. “I promise!” she said. “Have a blessed day, Roberta!”

I realized then where that thought had come from. I promise too, God, I thought. Not another moment.
