They said it was impossible. Zero pain with cancer spreading throughout his body was highly unusual. It was no surprise to Loren Cunningham, who had experienced countless miracles throughout his life that turned the impossible into the possible. That’s why, despite being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in February of 2023 at the age of 87, he is still able to pursue his vision with the vigor and enthusiasm of a young man. Our three-and-a-half-hour Zoom interview was filled with stories about Loren’s life, his work with YWAM (Youth With A Mission), and his ongoing OMT (Oral Mother Tongue) Bible translation ministry. And it all boiled down to one foundational truth: “God is love (1John 4:16).”

불가능한 일이라고 했다. 전신에 암이 퍼진 상태에서 통증이 제로인 것은 무척 이례적인 일이었다. 불가능, 이를 가능으로 바꾸시는 기적을 일평생 숱하게 경험해 온 로렌 커닝햄에게는 그리 놀라운 일이 아니었다. 만 87세(2023년 2월 기준)에 폐암 4기 선고를 받았음에도 불구하고 그가 천진하고도 뜨거운 청년의 활기와 열정으로 비전을 좇아 전진할 수 있는 이유다. 세 시간 반에 걸쳐 진행된 줌(Zoom) 인터뷰는 로렌의 지나온 생과 YWAM(Youth With A Mission)의 발자취, 현재 매진하는 ‘OMT(Oral Mother Tongue)’ 성경 번역 사역에 대한 이야기로 풍성히 채워졌다. 그리고 그 모든 이야기는 하나의 근본적인 진리로 축약되었다. “하나님은 사랑이시라”(요한1서 4:16).
