My husband, Bill, and I drove slowly down a gravel road that Sunday afternoon 10 years ago. With no destination in mind, we were exploring the countryside within an hour of our recently rented condo in Allen, Texas. We’d both grown up in the general area, moved to El Paso after our marriage and since to Allen, but neither of us had ever been in this neck of the woods. Yet somehow that day we had both felt gently drawn. Hay bales dotted the landscape. A tractor kicked up dust in a field. “It’s beautiful here,” I said to Bill, pointing out the wildflowers. The road turned abruptly, revealing a quaint downtown with an old-fashioned general store, a weathered train depot and a small white-steepled church.

We drove a bit farther and saw a subdivision under construction on the outskirts of town. We weren’t in the market for a new home but, curious, parked and took a tour of the unfinished houses with a salesman who happened to be there.

“I don’t know about you,” Bill said, “but there’s something about this place that calls to me.” I felt it too. As if we belonged there. Numerous times in our marriage, Bill and I have stepped out on faith, even when we didn’t immediately understand where we were being led or why. This was one of those times. By nightfall, we’d put a contract down on a home. Three months later, we moved in.

My aunt called one day. “You moved to Anna!” she said. “What a coincidence!”

“What do you mean?” “Didn’t you know that your great-great-grandmother, Rebecca, and her husband, James, moved from Tennessee to Anna at the end of the 1800s?”

“No, I never knew.” “Rebecca’s buried in a cemetery on the edge of town. You’re named Sara after their daughter.” Bill was as astonished as I was. 

Three years later, a historical marker was placed near our home, noting that the land was the original homestead of Collin McKinney, a pioneer who’d helped draft the Texas Declaration of Independence. We knew of him as my husband’s great-great-great-grandfather, but we had no idea we were living on a piece of land that was once his homestead.

It all made sense now. The Lord led us to move to Anna, the land of our ancestors, so we could feel rooted, connected to our heritage. No wonder we’re so at home here!

남편 빌과 나는 10년 전 어느 일요일 오후 자갈길을 천천히 운전했다. 목적지도 정하지 않은 채, 우리는 최근 텍사스주 앨런에 임대한 콘도에서 한 시간 거리의 시골을 돌아보고 있었다. 우리 부부는 둘 다 평범한 동네에서 자랐고, 결혼 후 엘파소로 갔다가 앨런으로 왔지만, 이런 지역에서 살아 본 적은 없다. 그런데 왠지 그날은 우리 둘 다 자연스럽게 마음이 끌렸다. 곳곳에 건초더미가 산재했다. 트랙터로 인해 밭의 먼지가 일었다. 

“여기 아름답다.” 

야생화를 가리키며 빌에게 말했다. 도로가 급격히 변하더니, 오래된 잡화점, 비바람에 풍화된 차량기지 그리고 흰색의 뾰족탑 교회가 있는 진기한 도심이 모습을 드러냈다.

더 나아갔더니 마을 외곽에 공사 중인 구역이 보였다. 우리는 아직 새로운 집을 찾지 않았지만, 궁금한 마음에 차를 주차하고 우연히 만난 중개업자와 아직 공사 중인 집들을 둘러보았다.

“당신은 어떤지 모르겠지만, 뭔가 이 장소가 나를 부르는 느낌이 들어.” 

빌이 말했다. 나도 그런 느낌이었다. 우리가 있어야 할 곳 같았다. 결혼 생활 중에 빌과 나는 여러 번 어디로 가는지, 왜 그런지도 이해하지 못한 순간조차 믿음 하나만 가지고 나아갔다. 이번도 그랬다. 해질 녘, 우리는 집 계약서를 작성했다. 3개월 후 우리는 이사했다.

어느 날 이모가 전화해서 말했다. 

“애나로 이사 왔구나! 어떻게 이런 우연이!” “무슨 말씀이세요?”

“너희 고조할머니 레베카와 고조할아버지 제임스가 1800년대 말에 테네시에서 애나로 이사 온 거 몰랐니?”

“아뇨, 전혀 몰랐어요.” 

“레베카 할머니가 마을 외곽의 묘지에 묻히셨잖아. 네 이름은 할머니의 딸 이름을 따서 사라라고 지은 거야.” 빌은 나만큼 놀라워했다.

3년 후, 우리 집 근처에 텍사스의 독립선언서 초안을 작성하는 데 도움을 준 선구자, 콜린 맥키니의 집터임을 알리는 역사적인 표지판이 세워졌다. 그분이 남편의 현조 할아버지인 것은 알았지만, 우리가 한때 그분이 살던 주택의 일부에 살고 있는지는 몰랐다.

이제야 말이 된다. 하나님께서 우리 부부를 선조의 땅인 애나로 이끄셨다. 우리의 뿌리 같은, 우리의 유산에 연결된 느낌이었다. 고향같이 편안한 느낌이 전혀 놀랍지 않다!
