Happiness is a gift. Just ask Adrian Sheffield, the dancing trash collector

One of the most positive people you’ll ever meet does one of the hardest jobs you could ever imagine.

Adrian Sheffield is a garbageman. In Austin, Texas, his upbeat, service-oriented approach to his job has made him a beloved celebrity.

He’s been on local news. The mayor of a nearby suburb presented him with a certificate of recognition “for his ability to bring joy to others.” Children run outside when they hear his truck coming, eager to catch sight of the man who sings, dances and even dresses in costume to “spread the love” while doing a job few people want to do.

And it’s not just any love. Adrian, who turned 40 last year, is a man of longtime faith who says he “knows all about God and what he can do.”

No matter the challenges he’s faced, Adrian says God has been there for him. And he wants to share the message of God’s love with everyone he meets, from the back of a garbage truck if he has to.

“The spiritual lesson I hope people will learn is, don’t give up,” Adrian says. “Life challenges do come. Stay strong and don’t give up on the Lord because he will see you through.”

에이드리언 셰필드는 쓰레기 청소부다. 텍사스주 오스틴에 사는 그는 낙관적이고 서비스 지향적인 태도로 직업에 접근한 덕분에 사랑받는 유명 인사가 되었다. 

그는 지역 뉴스에도 나왔다. 인근 교외의 시장은 ‘타인에게 기쁨을 전하는 능력’을 인정하는 인증서를 에이드리언에게 수여했다. 아이들은 그의 트럭이 오는 소리가 들리면 밖으로 달려 나갔다. 사람들이 거의 하고 싶어 하지 않는 일을 하면서 ‘사랑을 널리 퍼뜨리기 위해’ 노래하고 춤추고 코스튬까지 차려입는 그를 보고 싶어 하기 때문이다. 

이건 단순한 사랑이 아니다. 작년에 마흔이 된 에이드리언은 “하나님이 누구신지, 그분이 하실 수 있는 일이 무엇인지 잘 알죠”라고 말하는 오랜 신앙심을 가진 사람이다. 

어떤 도전에 직면하더라도 에이드리언은 하나님께서 자신을 위해 그 자리에 계신다고 말한다. 그리고 하나님의 사랑을 담은 메시지를 만나는 모든 이와 나누고 싶어 한다. 해야 한다면 쓰레기 수거 차량 뒤편에서라도 말이다. 

“사람들이 배우길 바라는 영적인 가르침은 포기하지 말라는 거예요. 인생에는 도전이 찾아오지만, 굳건히 버티면서 주님이 우리를 도와주실 테니 희망을 버리지 말아야 해요.” 

Adrian is a sanitation worker for Texas Disposal Systems, a private company that provides waste removal and processing services to Austin area communities.

Six days a week, Adrian and a driver pilot a garbage truck through city neighborhoods and haul trash from up to 1,200 homes.

It’s brutal work, especially in summer. Filled with trash, a single plastic garbage bin weighs “60 or 70 pounds, if not more,” Adrian says.

Over and over, he maneuvers bins from the curb to the truck, then either dumps them himself or attaches them to a mechanical arm to be lifted into the hopper. After that, he pulls a lever to crush the garbage and the truck moves on.

Adrian rides on the back, standing on a small platform and grabbing a handle. All day, he hops on and off the truck, slings bins and puts them back by the curb. He arrives at the sanitation yard at 6 A.M. and usually clocks out 12 hours later, after he and his partner empty the truck at a waste processing facility.

“When it gets hot, like 100 degrees, and you try to do this, a lot of guys just quit,” he says. To help new employees stay on the job, Adrian trains them, showing them the workings of the truck and giving them pointers on how to lift heavy bins and build their stamina.

Starting out, Adrian was one of those employees who wanted to quit. “I hated it the first day,” he says.

Sanitation is one of America’s most hazardous industries. Workers repeatedly lift heavy loads, are exposed to toxic chemicals and operate machinery with sharp moving parts. The risk of injury is higher than in mining.

Adrian stuck with it because he needed the paycheck. Growing up in Austin, he loved watching garbage haulers leap from their trucks, toss a few cans and hop back on like it was nothing. “Then when I actually experienced it, I was like, ‘Oh, man, this is so tiring,’” he says.

에이드리언은 오스틴 지역 사회에서 쓰레기 수거와 처리를 담당하는 사기업 텍사스 처리 시스템에서 일하는 환경미화원이다. 

일주일에 6일을 에이드리언과 운전기사는 도시 지역에서 쓰레기 수거 트럭을 몰며 1200가구에서 나온 폐기물을 실어 나른다. 

혹독한 업무다. 특히 여름에 더 그렇다. 쓰레기가 가득 찬 플라스틱 쓰레기통은 개당 무게가 “27~32kg에 이르죠. 그 이상은 아니더라고요”라고 한다. 

그는 반복해서 쓰레기통을 도로 연석에서 트럭으로 능숙하게 옮기고, 직접 쓰레기를 비우거나 로봇 팔에 붙들어 매어 투입구로 옮긴다. 그런 다음 쓰레기를 분쇄하기 위해 레버를 당기면 트럭이 앞으로 움직인다. 

에이드리언은 트럭 뒤에 타는데, 작은 플랫폼에 서서 손잡이를 잡는다. 종일 트럭을 타고 내리며 쓰레기통을 들어 멨다가 연석 옆에 다시 가져다 둔다. 그는 오전 6시에 쓰레기 처리장에 도착해서 보통 12시간 후에 퇴근 시간을 기록하는데, 동료와 함께 폐기물 처리 시설에서 트럭을 비우고 난 다음이다.    

“기온이 38℃에 이르도록 더워지면 많은 사람들이 이걸 하려다가도 그만둬요.” 

에이드리언은 새로 들어온 직원이 계속 일하도록 돕기 위해 그들을 교육한다. 트럭 조작법을 보여 주고 무거운 쓰레기통을 들어 올리는 법이나 체력을 키우는 방법을 조언하기도 한다. 

처음에는 그도 그만두고 싶어 하는 직원 중 하나였다. 

“첫날엔 일이 싫었어요.” 

환경미화는 미국에서 가장 위험한 일 중 하나다. 근로자들은 무거운 짐을 거듭 들어 올리고 유해 화학 물질에 노출되며, 예리하고 움직이는 부품이 달린 기계류를 조작한다. 부상의 위험이 광업보다 높다. 

에이드리언은 돈을 벌어야 했기 때문에 계속해서 이 힘든 일을 했다. 오스틴에서 자란 그는 쓰레기 수거반이 아무것도 아니라는 듯이 트럭에서 뛰어 내려서 쓰레기통 몇 개를 가볍게 던지고는 다시 올라타는 모습을 지켜보는 게 무척 좋았다.  

“그러다가 그걸 직접 경험하고 보니 ‘세상에, 정말 피곤한 일이군’ 싶었죠.”

Adrian realized that he had a choice. He could hate his job and be miserable. Or he could focus on the positive and try to make a difference. With a nudge from God, he chose positivity.

“I made it so it was fun,” he says. “I love being outside. No one micromanages you, and you’re not stuck in an office. You pick up the trash, and then you go home.”

To make the work even more fun, he began listening to music and dancing as he zoomed through the city.

People noticed. It’s not every day you see a garbageman boogying on the back of the truck and flashing an ear-to-ear grin at everyone he sees.

“I love seeing you smile!” people called out. “You just made my day!”

Adrian remembered running outside as a kid to watch garbage trucks at work. Decades later, kids on his route were just as fascinated. He’d wave to them and stop to show them the truck and let them climb into the cab and honk the horn. Parents came out to thank him.

“That’s when Batman came about,” he says. Adrian knew his youngest fans would flip out if they saw one of their favorite superheroes pull up to their house. Halloween was approaching, so he bought a Batman costume and wore it on the job.

“It was crazy,” he remembers. “Everybody came out to see that. They were filming me and taking pictures.”

“일을 재미있게 만들었어요. 나는 밖에 있는 걸 즐겨요. 누구도 세부적인 것까지 통제하려 들지 않고 사무실에 꼼짝없이 매여 있지도 않죠. 쓰레기를 수거한 다음에 집에 가는 거예요.” 

일을 훨씬 재미있게 만들기 위해서 그는 도시를 통과하는 동안 음악에 맞춰 춤을 추기 시작했다.  

사람들이 알아차렸다. 환경미화원이 트럭 뒤에서 춤을 추면서 만나는 모든 사람을 향해 입이 귀에 걸리도록 웃는 모습을 보는 건 흔치 않은 일이다.  

“당신의 미소를 보는 게 좋아요! 덕분에 행복해졌어요!” 

사람들이 크게 외쳤다. 에이드리언은 어렸을 때 쓰레기 수거 트럭이 일하는 모습을 지켜보려고 밖에서 뛰어다녔던 걸 기억했다. 수십 년이 흘렀지만, 그의 구역에 사는 아이들도 똑같이 매료되었다. 그는 아이들에게 손을 흔들어 주며, 정차해서 트럭을 보여 주고 운전석에 태워서 경적을 울리게 해 준다. 부모들은 밖으로 나와 감사를 전한다.  

“그때 배트맨이 떠올랐죠.”

가장 좋아하는 슈퍼히어로가 자신의 집에 차를 세우면 어린 팬들이 굉장히 흥분할 것임을 에이드리언은 알았다. 핼러윈이 가까워지자 배트맨 의상을 사서 근무하는 동안 입었다. 

“열광적이었어요. 다들 보려고 밖으로 나와서는 사진과 동영상으로 날 찍었어요.”

More costumes followed. A bunny on Easter. Santa Claus at Christmas. Spider-Man. A leprechaun. Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.

Last Christmas, he switched things up and donned a Grinch costume. “I won’t take your toys, but I will take that trash!” he said as he pulled up to houses. The costume landed him on local news.

“These kids are like my family,” Adrian told the news crew. “That’s what keeps me going.”

Adrian admits that sanitation work—and his life—is not always easy. He and his two sisters were raised by a single mother who still looks out for him. “My mom is a strong woman,” he says. “I look up to her. I feel a strong responsibility to take care of her.” 

Adrian works extra shifts to earn additional money, and even then he still finds it hard to make ends meet. He’s also had all the usual ups and downs of romantic relationships and financial setbacks.

When he talked to GUIDEPOSTS, he was going through one of his low periods. “It feels like everything has started coming down on me.”

But he was quick to pivot to the strength he gets from his faith.

“I look at it as God getting me ready for whatever he has in store for me,” he says. “I think God is growing me up and preparing me for something great. Right now, it’s not my season. But I know it’s coming. I’m just praying and staying positive.”

And he’s still spreading the love from the back of his garbage truck.

This Easter, he hadn’t felt up to putting on the bunny costume. But he bounced back. Talking to GUIDEPOSTS a month later, he was already planning his Fourth of July outfit. “Maybe Captain America to come back with a bang. Or an American flag cape with flag sleeves and flag socks.”

When the Austin suburb of Georgetown gave Adrian a certificate of recognition last year for his positive influence on the community, he was stunned to see a crowd gathered at the city council meeting to cheer for him.

“That was an amazing day,” he says. “I think my faith gives me a heart for other people. I look forward to making people happy. When I see them smile, I say: Mission accomplished.”

더 많은 코스튬이 이어졌다. 부활절에는 토끼(아이들에게 부활절 달걀 등을 가져다준다는 이야기 속 토끼－역자 주) 복장을, 크리스마스에는 산타클로스 복장을 했다. 스파이더맨, 레프러콘(아일랜드 민화에 등장하는 요정－역자 주), 위니 더 푸의 티거도 있었다. 지난 크리스마스에는 생각을 바꿔서 그린치(닥터 수스의 동화에서 크리스마스에 관한 모든 것을 훔치는 캐릭터－역자 주) 코스튬을 입었다.  

“여러분의 장난감을 가져가진 않아요. 하지만 저 쓰레기는 가져가겠어요!” 

에이드리언은 이렇게 말하며 차를 세웠다. 그린치 코스튬으로 지역 뉴스에도 등장했다. 

“이 아이들은 정말 가족 같죠. 그래서 계속할 수 있어요.”

그는 뉴스팀에 말했다. 

에이드리언은 환경미화원 일－그리고 자기 삶－이 항상 쉽지만은 않다는 사실을 인정한다. 어머니는 혼자서 그를 비롯해 여동생 둘을 키우셨고, 여전히 그를 챙기신다. 

“엄마는 강인한 여성이세요. 엄마를 존경하고, 보살펴 드려야 한다는 강한 책임감을 느껴요.” 

에이드리언은 돈을 더 벌기 위해 추가 근무까지 하지만, 그래도 수지타산을 맞추는 게 쉽지 않다. 이성 교제와 재정 문제에서도 평범한 부침을 모두 겪어 보았다. 

가이드포스트와 인터뷰하던 즈음 그는 힘든 시기를 보내고 있었다.

“만사가 저를 벌주기 시작한 기분이에요.”

하지만 그는 신앙에서 얻은 힘으로 빠르게 선회했다.  

“하나님께서 절 위해 마련하신 것이 무엇이든 그것에 대비하도록 하신다고 생각해요. 그분은 절 키우시고 위대한 것을 위해 준비하도록 하시죠. 지금 당장은 나의 시간이 아니지만, 때가 오고 있다는 걸 알아요. 그저 기도하면서 긍정적으로 지낼 뿐이죠.” 

그는 여전히 쓰레기 수거 차량 뒤편에서 사랑을 전한다. 

이번 부활절에는 토끼 복장을 입을 마음이 아니지만, 금방 회복했다. 한 달이 지나 가이드포스트와 인터뷰할 때는 이미 7월 4일(미국 독립 기념일－역자 주) 복장을 계획하고 있었다.

“아마 캡틴 아메리카가 화려하게 돌아올 거예요. 아니면 성조기로 만든 망토를 입고 성조기 토시에 성조기 양말을 갖출지도 모르고요.” 

지난해 오스틴 교외의 조지타운이 에이드리언이 지역 사회에 미치는 긍정적인 영향을 인정해 인증서를 수여했다. 그때, 그는 자신을 응원하려고 시 의회 회의에 모여든 인파를 보고 깜짝 놀랐다.  

“경이로운 날이었어요. 신앙이 타인을 위하는 마음을 주었다고 생각해요. 사람들을 행복하게 만들고 싶어서 견딜 수가 없어요. 그들이 미소 짓는 걸 보면 ‘임무 완수’라고 말하죠.”
