In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Guideposts Korea, we spoke with 

John Temple, president of Guideposts (U.S.), about Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s founding vision and how that mission continues today.

길을 잃은 듯 막막한 순간, 누군가가 “여기가 길입니다”라고 알려 준다면 얼마나 든든할까. 미국 가이드포스트는 지난 80년 동안 그런 영적 이정표가 되어 왔다. 하나님의 은혜와 희망을 담은 이야기로 각자 서 있는 자리에서 만나고, 그 길 위에서 함께 걸어온 올해는 한국 가이드포스트가 창간 60주년을 맞은 뜻깊은 해다. 60년 전 한국 땅에서도 같은 비전이 이어져 문화와 언어를 넘어 수많은 독자들에게 하나님의 사랑을 전해 왔다. 창립자 노먼 빈센트 필 목사가 품었던 꿈과 오늘의 사명을, 미국 가이드포스트 존 템플 회장에게 직접 들어 보았다.

It has been 80 years since Norman Vincent Peale and Ruth Stafford Peale founded Guideposts in 1945. Could you share what it means to you to faithfully carry forward this legacy?

In many ways, it is just hard to believe. When I imagine what it must have been like to form Guideposts as WWII was ending. Coming out of such a dark period of history and wanting to help the world find the hope that comes from a loving relationship with the Creator. To imagine all the things that this organization has helped people navigate in those 80 years is just incredible. Norman and Ruth Peale believed in meeting people where they were and helping people believe in themselves by aligning their purpose with God’s purpose. Our team not only feels that responsibility, but we derive inspiration from that legacy and help meet people where they are today.

여러 가지로 정말 믿기지 않습니다. 제2차 세계대전이 끝나 가던 시점에 가이드포스트를 세운다는 것이 어땠을까 상상하면 말이죠. 역사의 암흑기를 벗어나 창조주와의 사랑의 관계에서 비롯된 희망을 세상에 전파하고자 하는 그 마음이 어떤 것이었을지 말입니다. 또 지난 80년간 가이드포스트가 사람들이 길을 찾을 수 있도록 돕는 과정에서 해 온 그 모든 일을 상상하면 말이죠. 노먼 필과 루스 필은 사람들을 있는 그대로 받아들이며 다가가 그들의 목적을 하나님의 목적과 일치시킴으로써 스스로를 믿을 수 있도록 도왔습니다. 오늘의 가이드포스트 역시 그 책임을 느낄 뿐 아니라 그 유산에서 영감을 얻어 오늘날 사람들이 있는 바로 그 자리에서 그들을 만나고 있습니다.

The six core values that U.S. Guideposts upholds are very impressive. Could you introduce each of these values? If there are Bible verses that guide or inspire any of them, please feel free to share them.

At Guideposts, we help people believe that anything is possible through faith, hope, and prayer. In all we do, we always seek to affirm the positive, unite rather than divide, and meet people exactly where they are on their walk with God. When you are right with God you exude those virtues that are the fruits of the spirit. We encourage those virtues as part of the journey with your Creator. Thinking positively, acknowledging your blessings with gratitude, connecting with God’s purpose, practicing radical forgiveness, living your values, and finding connection by loving your neighbor – these are all Biblical values that not only help us grow closer to God’s love but act as a practical guide for how to live. 

We are the inheritors of the “Power of Positive Thinking” and are called to love God and one another. 

As Paul writes: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”(Philippians 4:8)

우리는 ‘긍정적 사고의 힘’을 물려받았으며 하나님을 사랑하고 서로를 사랑하도록 부름 받은 사람들입니다.

사도 바울의 말씀입니다. “끝으로 형제들아 무엇에든지 참되며 무엇에든지 경건하며 무엇에든지 옳으며 무엇에든지 정결하며 무엇에든지 사랑받을 만하며 무엇에든지 칭찬받을 만하며 무슨 덕이 있든지 무슨 기림이 있든지 이것들을 생각하라”(빌립보서 4:8).

Since taking on the role of Guideposts’ president in 2017, are there any particular stories or moments that stand out as clear testimonies to God’s work in and through Guideposts?

You may also share moments that were especially rewarding or encouraging.

I actually took on the role then, and there are lots of stories and moments that we’ve shared with millions of people. But the one I’d like to share is about the impact a colleague had on me. At Guideposts, we live our mission. Whether it’s gathering to pray over submitted prayer requests every Monday morning or the care and concern our colleagues show for one another, we strive to live our mission. One day, things were off to a rough start. We had just had a team meeting, and we were not seeing eye to eye. I was frustrated and they were frustrated with me. Some numbers had come in from the month before and they didn’t look good. I had spent way too much time with the news that morning, reading about all of the fear and hatred in the world. I even got an email from a network asking if I felt lonely and isolated – the answer to both questions was “yes.” 

Just then the phone rang, and it was my colleague Clara. Clara is one of the great people at Guideposts who helps our customers whenever they need it but she’s not some one who calls me often. I answered the phone, and she said that something told her to reach out to me right now and let me know that she was thinking of me, that I was blessed, and I needed to keep doing what I was doing. I couldn’t believe it. Not only had God put that message on Clara’s heart but she was open enough to receive it. That’s the Guideposts mission lived out.

2017년부터 가이드포스트의 회장으로 사역을 이어 오셨습니다. 가이드포스트 안에서 또는 가이드포스트를 통해서 특별히 하나님의 역사가 뚜렷하게 드러난 이야기나 순간이 있으신지요?

그간 수백만 명의 사람들과 수많은 이야기와 순간들을 나누었지요. 그중에서 특히 제가 한 동료에게서 받은 영향에 관한 이야기를 하고 싶군요. 가이드포스트에서 우리는 사명대로 살아갑니다. 매주 월요일 아침 독자들이 보내온 기도 요청을 위해 모여서 기도하는 것이든 동료 간에 나누는 관심과 배려든 우리는 사명에 따라 살아가려고 노력합니다. 

그날은 시작부터 순탄치 않았습니다. 회의를 막 마쳤는데 서로 의견이 맞지 않았어요. 저도 답답했고 팀원들도 답답해했죠. 지난달 실적이 나왔는데 좋지 않았어요. 게다가 저는 그날 아침 뉴스를 지나치게 많이 봤는데, 온통 세상에 만연한 공포와 증오에 관한 것뿐이었죠. 심지어 어떤 방송사로부터 외로움과 고립감을 느끼는지 묻는 이메일까지 받았어요. 제 답변은 두 질문 모두 ‘그렇다’였습니다.

그때 전화가 울렸습니다. 동료 클라라였어요. 클라라는 고객이 필요로 할 때 언제든지 도움을 주는 가이드포스트의 훌륭한 직원이죠. 하지만 저에게 자주 전화를 거는 직원은 아니었어요. 전화를 받으니 그녀가 말하더군요. 어떤 직감이 들었는데 당장 저에게 연락해서 그녀가 나를 생각하고 있다는 것을, 내가 축복받은 사람이라는 것을 그리고 지금 내가 하고 있는 일을 계속해야 한다는 것을 말해 주고 싶었다고요. 

전 믿기지가 않았어요. 하나님께서 클라라의 가슴속에 그런 메시지를 심어 주셨을 뿐만 아니라 그녀가 기꺼이 그 메시지를 받아들였다는 사실이요. 바로 가이드포스트의 사명이 실현되는 순간이었습니다.

Who are the primary readers of U.S. Guideposts, and what impact do you believe the magazine has on them?

Guideposts has a wonderful group of readers from across the United States. From small rural communities to large cities, Guideposts readers form a community of people who want to be inspired by stories of God’s Grace. Beyond Guideposts magazine, they connect through our devotionals, fiction books, other magazines, and our sleep and meditation app, Abide. We nurture that community through newsletters, webinars, youtube videos, and, of course, prayer. Guideposts is a magazine but it is a touchpoint – a window into the whole of the organization.

미국 가이드포스트의 주요 독자는 누구이며 잡지가 그들에게 어떤 영향을 준다고 보십니까?

가이드포스트는 미국 전역에서 훌륭한 독자층을 보유하고 있습니다. 작은 농촌 지역부터 대도시까지, 가이드포스트는 하나님의 은혜를 다룬 이야기에서 영감을 얻고자 하는 사람들의 공동체입니다. 그들은 가이드포스트 잡지를 넘어 우리의 묵상집, 소설책, 다른 잡지들 그리고 우리가 만든 수면 및 명상 앱 ‘어바이드(Abide)’를 통해서도 연결되어 있습니다. 

우리는 뉴스레터, 웨비나(실시간 온라인 세미나－역자 주), 유튜브 영상 그리고 물론 기도를 통해 그 공동체를 키워 나가고 있습니다. 가이드포스트는 하나의 잡지이지만 동시에 접점이기도 합니다. 우리 조직 전체를 들여다볼 수 있는 창문이라고 볼 수 있죠.

When it comes to developing the content of the magazine—including selecting contributors and themes—what are the most important factors you take into consideration?

The most important aspect of content is good storytelling and identifying that moment when God’s Grace breaks through. Our editor-in-chief often described it as that moment where you feel the chill down your spine or that brings the tear to your eye. We don’t tell people’s life stories, we strive for more intimate moments regardless of whether you are a private person or a celebrity. 

기고자 선정이나 주제 설정 등 잡지 콘텐츠를 기획할 때 가장 중요하게 고려하는 요소는 무엇인가요?

콘텐츠에서 가장 중요한 것은 좋은 스토리텔링과 하나님의 은혜가 드러나는 순간을 찾아내는 것입니다. 우리 편집장은 종종 그것을 등골이 서늘해질 정도로 전율이 느껴지거나 눈시울이 뜨거워지는 순간이라고 표현하더군요. 우리는 인생 전체 이야기를 담기보다 일반인이든 유명인이든 관계없이 그 사람의 내밀한 순간들을 포착하려고 노력합니다.

Before speaking as a president, is there a particular story, article, or individual that has left a lasting impression on you as a Christian reader?

Yes. I think back to my teenage years with my pastor, Paul. He was young, closer to my age than my parents, and one day we were golfing with two men who were loud and crude. When they found out Paul was a pastor, they instantly apologized, trying to put on a good face. Paul quickly eased their guilt. He reminded them that God already knows them fully and loves them anyway—that we don’t need to wear masks with Him. That lesson—leading with love, not judgment—has stuck with me ever since.

회장의 입장이 아닌 한 명의 크리스천 독자로서 회장님께 지속적인 인상을 남긴 특별한 이야기나 기사, 또는 인물이 있습니까?

네, 있습니다. 저의 십 대 시절을 함께한 폴 목사님이에요. 매우 젊은 목사님이셨어요. 제 부모님보다는 제 나이에 더 가까운 분이셨죠. 어느 날, 우리는 두 남자와 골프를 같이 쳤어요. 시끄럽고 무례한 사람들이었어요. 그들은 폴 목사님이 목사라는 사실을 알게 되자 즉시 사과하며 좋은 모습을 보이려고 애썼습니다. 목사님은 재빨리 그들의 죄책감을 덜어 주셨습니다. 하나님께서는 이미 그들을 완전히 알고 계시고 어찌 됐건 그들을 사랑하신다는 것, 우리는 하나님 앞에서 가면을 쓸 필요가 없다는 것을 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 판단이 아닌 사랑으로 인도하는 것, 이 교훈은 그때부터 지금까지 제 마음속에 남아 있습니다.

Even as print media faces challenges, you have led the launch of new magazines in addition to Guideposts. Could you explain the purpose of each publication and any meaningful results or impact they’ve had?

With technology advancing at a fevered pace, counterintuitively, we see continuing strong interest in print. The days of magazines with millions of subscribers are gone but people are craving analog experiences and the ability to get aways from screens. In both book and magazine formats we still see a lot of potential, even if it looks differently than in the past. 

Our magazines such as Mornings with Jesus (a devotional), Angles on Earth (focusing on glimpses of heaven), and Strength & Grace (a devotional for caregivers) all serve different needs than Guideposts magazine and focus on smaller but devoted audiences.

인쇄 매체가 어려움에 직면하고 있음에도 불구하고 가이드포스트 외에 새로운 잡지들을 창간하셨습니다. 각 간행물의 목적과 의미 있는 성과나 영향에 대해 설명해 주시겠습니까?

기술이 빠른 속도로 발전하고 있지만 역설적으로 인쇄물에 대한 관심은 더욱 커지고 있습니다. 수백만 구독자를 보유한 잡지의 시대는 지났지만 사람들은 아날로그적 경험과 화면에서 벗어날 수 있는 능력을 갈망하고 있습니다. 우리는 도서와 잡지 모두 여전히 많은 잠재력을 가지고 있다고 생각합니다. 비록 과거와는 다른 모습이지만 말입니다.

You seem to have responded flexibly to the changing times and pursued new initiatives. What has been your source of inspiration for taking on and leading these new ventures?

I believe that God speaks to all people in all times. There’s no one “right way” to help people grow in their relationship with God and our job is to figure out how to help as many people as we can. Whether that’s through an app, a social post, a youtube video, it doesn’t matter. We create tools that we must use to His glory. That’s what inspires me.

변화하는 시대에 유연하게 대응하며 새로운 사업들을 추진해 오신 것 같습니다. 새로운 모험을 시작하고 이끌어 가는 데 있어 영감의 원천은 무엇입니까?

하나님께서는 모든 시대의 모든 사람들에게 말씀하신다고 믿습니다. 사람들이 하나님과의 관계 안에서 성장하도록 돕는 단 하나의 ‘올바른 방법’은 없으며, 우리의 역할은 가능한 한 많은 사람들을 어떻게 도울 수 있을지 알아내는 것입니다. 앱을 통해서든 소셜미디어 게시물을 통해서든 유튜브 영상을 통해서든 상관없습니다. 우리는 하나님의 영광을 위해 사용해야 할 도구들을 만들어 냅니다. 그것이 제 영감의 원천입니다. 

In an age that has moved beyond digital media into the era of artificial intelligence, what do you believe is the unique mission or responsibility that a print-based Christian magazine should uphold?

I’d frame it less as “print” versus “AI” and more as a question of how we best use AI as a global church. First, we must understand that God speaks to people not machines. So, however we may use this tool now or in the future, we must acknowledge and respect this truth. Second, we need to ask ourselves, “how can we use it to God’s Glory?” Can its power be harnessed to amplify scripture, tell stories of God’s Grace in new and exciting ways, help to expand our ideas about what’s possible? I think all of that is possible but AI will never be a substitute for God’s love.

디지털 미디어를 넘어 인공지능 시대로 접어든 지금 인쇄 매체 기반의 기독교 잡지가 견지해야 할 고유한 사명이나 책임은 무엇이라고 생각하십니까?

저는 그것을 ‘인쇄 매체’ 대 ‘AI’라는 프레임보다는 세계의 기독교 공동체가 어떻게 AI를 가장 잘 활용할 수 있느냐의 문제로 봅니다. 첫째, 하나님께서는 기계가 아닌 사람에게 말씀하신다는 것을 이해해야 합니다. 따라서 우리가 현재나 미래에 이 도구를 어떻게 사용하든 이 진리를 인정하고 존중해야 합니다. 둘째, 우리 자신에게 ‘어떻게 하면 이 도구를 하나님의 영광을 위해 사용할 수 있을까?’라고 물어야 합니다. 성경을 전파하기 위해, 하나님의 은혜에 관한 이야기들을 새롭고 흥미진진한 방식으로 전하기 위해, 무엇이 가능한지에 대한 우리의 생각을 확장하기 위해 AI의 힘을 활용할 수 있는가? 저는 그 모든 것이 가능하다고 생각하지만 AI가 하나님의 사랑을 결코 대체할 수는 없을 것입니다.

How has this ministry personally shaped or enriched your own faith journey?

I’m living proof that Guideposts works. My faith and prayer life is much stronger than when I began. Going through family trials, illness and death of people close to me, and every day challenges, I’m turning more of my hopes and fears over to God. Having an organization that affirms God’s love has been a real joy and life-giving during some tough seasons.

이 사역이 개인적으로 회장님의 신앙 여정을 어떻게 형성했고 또 풍요롭게 했습니까?

저는 가이드포스트가 실제로 효과가 있다는 산 증인입니다. 제 신앙과 기도 생활은 예전보다 훨씬 더 깊어졌습니다. 가족의 시련들, 가까운 사람들의 질병과 죽음 그리고 일상의 어려움 속에서 제 희망과 두려움을 점점 더 많이 하나님께 의탁하고 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑을 확언하는 조직이 있다는 것이 힘든 시기에 진정한 기쁨이 되었고 숨을 불어넣어 주었습니다.

Beyond publishing magazines, are there any ventures or projects you would like to boldly pursue despite limitations? We would also love to hear about any areas in which you might be interested in collaborating with Guideposts Korea.

We are excited to partner with mission-aligned organizations like Guideposts Korea. We are not reaching as many people outside of the US as we would like and partnerships like this one are truly inspiring. Right now, Guideposts Korea partners on our flagship magazine but we have 3 other magazines, about 60 books a year, thought conditioners, and an app with so many Bible based sleep stories and meditations that if you started listening nonstop today, it would be 2032 before you’d finish. We’d love to be able to bring even more content to the Korean speaking world and beyond.

제약이 있음에도 불구하고 잡지 출간을 넘어 과감하게 추진하고 싶은 사업이나 프로젝트가 있습니까? 또한 한국 가이드포스트와 협업하고 싶은 분야가 있다면 말씀해 주시기 바랍니다.

우리는 한국 가이드포스트 같은 선교적 사명을 공유하는 조직들과 파트너십을 맺게 된 것을 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다. 미국 밖에서 원하는 만큼 많은 사람들에게 다가가지 못하고 있는 이런 파트너십은 정말 고무적입니다. 현재 한국 가이드포스트는 우리의 주력 잡지와 파트너십을 맺고 있습니다만 그 외에 잡지 3개, 연간 약 60권의 도서, 마음 훈련 자료들도 있습니다. 그리고 성경을 기반으로 한 잠잘 때 듣는 이야기와 명상을 담은 앱도 있는데, 당장 오늘부터 쉬지 않고 듣기 시작해도 2032년이 되어서야 다 들을 수 있을 정도로 콘텐츠가 많습니다. 한국어권은 물론 그 너머의 세계에 더 많은 콘텐츠를 전파할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Outside of your professional duties, how do you usually spend your personal or leisure time?

I have a wife, 3 kids, 3 dogs, and a Grandpa all living at home with me. We have a very busy household keeping up with all of their activities. When I do get some free time, my wife and I enjoy going out for a ride on our motorcycle.

업무 외에 개인적인 시간이나 여가를 보통 어떻게 보내십니까?

저는 아내, 아이 셋, 강아지 세 마리 그리고 할아버지와 함께 살고 있습니다. 온 식구들의 활동을 따라가느라 집안이 늘 분주하죠. 자유 시간이 생기면 아내와 저는 오토바이를 타고 드라이브하는 것을 즐깁니다.

As president of Guideposts and as a Christian, what are your future visions and plans?

I believe the global church needs to be better at coming together—bridging divisions, pooling resources, finding shared vision. We’re called to love God and love our neighbors, and that means setting aside differences for Kingdom impact. The future of ministry, I think, lies in partnerships and unity that show the world a better way.

가이드포스트 회장으로서 그리고 크리스천으로서 미래에 대한 비전과 계획은 무엇입니까?

저는 전 세계 교회가 더욱 힘을 합쳐야 한다고 생각해요. 즉 분열을 치유하고 자원을 모으며 공통의 비전을 찾는 일에 더 신경 써야 한다고 믿습니다. 우리는 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하라고 부름 받았습니다. 이는 나라의 영향력을 위해 차이를 내려놓는 것을 의미합니다. 사역의 미래는 세상에 더 나은 길을 제시하는 파트너십과 연합에 있다고 생각합니다.

Finally, as Guideposts Korea celebrates its 60th anniversary, could you share a message of congratulations and encouragement?

I’m so proud of Guideposts Korea. For 60 years you’ve brought people closer to God through storytelling, and that’s no small thing. You’ve modeled what it means to build connection across cultures in the global church. I look forward to deepening our partnership over the next 60 years. God bless you all!
