If you are restless and dissatisfied with your life, ask yourself, “Am I doing what I really feel I should be doing? Am I being my real self?”

William L. Morrisette, who became a vice president at Eastern Air Lines last year, told me he asked himself these questions a number of years ago at a time when he had a very good job as a salesman. “But I realized that I wasn’t content with myself,” he said. “My heart wasn’t in the product I was selling. I loved airplanes. I had always wanted to be with an airline.”

People thought Morrisette was out of his mind when he quit his well-paying sales job to take a position in the Eastern Air Lines ticket office at a much reduced salary. “When I applied at the airline office, they told me only a few low-paying jobs were available” he said. “I told them that I liked the spirit of their organization, that I wanted to work for them and didn’t care where I started. So I got the job.”

Because he began channeling all his ability and energy toward the type of work he loved most, it didn’t take long for William Morrisette to climb high in his organization.

“The Lord gave you certain qualities which are more attractive in you than in anyone,” I told one woman who felt she needed an entirely new personality to be a success. Then I pointed out that Will Rogers was always an Oklahoma cowboy. Jimmy Durante never changed much from the East Side boy with the big nose. Neither would have achieved success if he had tried to be somebody else.

Russell Nype, who made such a hit in the play, “Call me Madam,” a few years ago, told us an interesting story about himself.

In his high school and college days, Russell felt he was always on the fringe of the crowd. He longed to be popular, to be in the center, but felt his unattractive appearance and shy personality held him back.

“I paid for expensive contact lenses so that I could see without wearing my hated eye glasses,” he admitted. “Then I studiously cultivated the mannerisms of those I thought were the most popular types.” I wanted to become an entirely different person.

Russell Nype went into acting. He spent years copying, in an exaggerated way, the personalities of various male stars. But he was rejected for dramatic parts time after time.

Then a discerning producer spotted something in Russell Nype, and he was given a part in “Call Me Madam.”

“Here’s the pay-off.” Russell revealed. They had me play a part that was identical to my pre-Broadway self. I had to be shy and wear glasses. I laugh now when I think of it. After all my efforts to be different here I was playing my true self.”

The critics hailed Russell Nype for his charm and spontaneity in this role. Today he is wearing glasses again—and begin himself, which points up the fact that one makes a mistake trying to be someone he is not.

In my counselling I am careful not to advise a person to try and take on a completely new personality. Spiritual rebirth, however, where one replaces doubtful values with Christ-like qualities is much to be desired. This kind of transformation will do much to bring to the surface hidden creative qualities in an individual. It won’t make a good financier out of a mechanic—or vice versa. But, the miraculous transformations you sometimes see in people are usually the result of the development of latent powers which were in these people all the time.

Be your real self. Let your Godgiven qualities develop naturally and you will make the most out of your life.

만약 불안을 느끼거나 삶이 불만족스럽다면 이렇게 자문해 보라. 

‘내가 정말 해야 하는 일을 하고 있는가? 진정한 나로 살아가고 있는가?’

작년에 이스턴 항공의 부회장이 된 윌리엄 L. 모리셋은 수년 전에 이런 질문들을 자신에게 했다고 말했다. 당시 그는 영업사원으로 한창 잘나가고 있었다. 

“그런데 저 자신에게 만족하지 못하고 있다는 사실을 깨달았어요. 제 마음은 팔고 있는 물건에 있지 않았어요. 저는 비행기를 사랑했죠. 언제나 항공사와 함께하고 싶었어요.” 

그가 보수가 높은 영업직을 그만두고 보수가 훨씬 적은 이스턴 항공의 발권 창구에 취직했을 때 사람들은 그를 두고 정신이 나갔다고 했다. 

“제가 이스턴 항공의 사무직에 지원했을 때 항공사 측에선 보수가 낮은 자리 몇 개가 있다고 하더군요. 저는 그 조직의 정신이 마음에 든다고 말했어요. 그래서 그들과 함께 일하고 싶고, 무슨 일로 시작하든지 상관없다고 했죠. 그래서 그 일을 하게 된 겁니다.”

가장 사랑하는 일에 능력과 에너지를 온전히 쏟아부었기 때문에 그는 머지않아 조직에서 승승장구했다. 

“주님께서는 다른 누구보다 당신이기 때문에 더 매력적으로 보이는 자질들을 주셨습니다.” 

나는 성공하려면 지금의 자신과는 완전히 다른 성격이 필요하다고 생각하는 한 여성에게 이렇게 말했다. 그러고는 다음의 사실을 강조했다. 윌 로저스는 언제나 오클라호마의 카우보이였다. 지미 듀란트는 코가 큰 이스트 사이드 소년 이미지를 결코 바꾸지 않았다. 두 사람 모두 다른 누군가가 되려고 했다면 성공하지 못했을 것이다. 몇 년 전, 〈콜 미 마담(Call me Madam)〉이라는 연극에서 대히트를 친 러셀 나이프가 자신에 대한 흥미로운 이야기를 했다.

고등학교와 대학교 시절에 러셀은 늘 무리에서 겉도는 기분을 느꼈다. 그는 인기를 얻고 싶었고 중심에 서고 싶었지만 매력적이지 못한 외모와 수줍음 많은 성격이 걸림돌이 된다고 생각했다. 

“저는 비싼 콘택트렌즈를 샀어요. 너무나도 싫어하던 안경을 벗을 수 있었죠. 그리고 가장 인기 있는 유형이라고 생각한 사람들의 특징을 주도면밀하게 익혔어요. 완전히 다른 사람이 되고 싶었던 거죠.”

그가 고백했다. 러셀 나이프는 연기의 길로 들어섰다. 몇 년 동안 다양한 남성 스타 배우들의 성격을 과장된 방식으로 모방했다. 하지만 연극에서 배역을 따는 데 연거푸 실패했다. 

그러던 중 안목이 있는 한 제작자가 러셀 나이프에게서 뭔가를 발견했고, 〈콜 미 마담(Call me Madam)〉에서 배역을 맡겼다. 

“그게 바로 전환점이었어요. 그들은 나에게 브로드웨이 전의 내 모습과 똑같은 역할을 맡겼습니다. 수줍음 많고 안경 쓴 역할을요. 지금 생각하면 웃음이 납니다. 그렇게 다르게 보이려고 애썼는데 결국 진짜 내 모습을 연기하고 있었던 겁니다.” 

러셀이 말했다. 평론가들은 이 역할에서 러셀 나이프의 매력과 즉흥성을 극찬했다. 오늘날 그는 다시 안경을 쓴다. 본래의 자신으로 돌아온 것이다. 이는 결국 자기 자신이 아닌 다른 사람이 되려고 할 때 실수를 하게 된다는 사실을 보여 준다.

나는 상담할 때 누군가에게 완전히 새로운 성격을 만들어 내라고 조언하지 않으려고 조심한다. 그러나 영적 거듭남 즉 불확실한 가치들을 그리스도를 닮은 자질들로 바꾸는 일은 매우 바람직하다. 이런 변화는 개인 안에 잠재되어 있는 창조적 자질을 끌어올리는 데 큰 힘이 된다. 그렇다고 해서 기계공을 훌륭한 금융가로 바꾸지는 못한다. 그 반대도 마찬가지다. 하지만 우리가 때때로 사람들에게서 목격하는 기적과도 같은 변화는 대개 그 사람들 안에 원래부터 잠재해 있던 힘이 발현된 결과인 경우가 많다.

진짜 자신이 되어라. 하나님이 주신 자질을 자연스럽게 발현시킨다면 당신은 삶을 최대한 잘 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
