I’d put off knee replacement surgery as long as I could. Now, waiting to be taken into the operating room, I anxiously gripped the rails of my hospital gurney.
If anyone else were having surgery, I’d be praying for their comfort. I kept a list of people who needed prayers, along with the dates I’d started and updates on how they were doing, so I knew how effective prayer could be. But offering prayers was very different from receiving them.
A nurse came to draw blood. I closed my eyes and thought about my most recent Wednesday-morning Bible study. We’d been studying Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians that day. Before turning to the scripture, the vicar asked if any of us 10 or so women in the class needed prayers for ourselves or anyone else.
“A family member recently lost her husband,” said one woman.
“My nephew needs prayers to find a new job,” said another.
When it was my turn, I told everyone I’d be having surgery at 10 A.M. the following Monday. “Please pray for the procedure to go well,” I said. “And for a smooth recovery.” I knew that the weeks right after the operation would likely be the hardest, that recovery was long and intensive. I dreaded being stuck at home, unable to help at church or my neighbors. At least my praying would go on.
Everyone at Bible study is praying for me now, I reminded myself, pulling my hospital gown tightly around me. But the thought didn’t calm my nerves at all. Truth was, the idea made me feel even more vulnerable. God, I’d much rather be giving help than needing it, I thought as I was wheeled into the OR.
As I woke up later in recovery, faces came to mind: Linda, Tara, Susan, Cynthia, Karin…all the Bible study ladies and the vicar. This time, thinking of their prayers made me feel supported and loved, completely at peace. I no longer feared the long recovery before me.
While the surgical team worked on my knee, God had been at work on my heart. As happy as he was when I prayed for others, he’d created me to receive prayers from others as well. Prayers I’d be relying on throughout my recovery and beyond.
