MY NAME IS…

By MARY MONROE,  Oakland, California

I sat at my desk at the office where I worked as a secretary, eating lunch and watching the clock tick. I felt stuck. Don’t get me wrong: I was thankful to have a job…but it wasn’t my dream.

My dream was to become an author. Still, after high school, I took office positions to pay the bills. I taught myself how to write by reading every how-to book I could get my hands on, studying novels and combing through countless magazines. I submitted my work—short stories and novels—everywhere I could. On the title page of every manuscript, I’d proudly type in capital letters, big and bold: BY MARY MONROE. Something about seeing my name in print gave me a thrill…and hope. My full name was Mary Alice Monroe, but I didn’t typically use Alice since Mary Monroe had such a nice ring to it.

Finally—after more than a decade of trying and trying—I sold my first novel, The Upper Room, to a major publisher.

This is it! I thought. Fame and fortune would be right around the corner, right? But despite getting strong reviews, my book didn’t sell many copies.

After that, I couldn’t interest a single publisher in buying my second novel. Over the next 15 years, I collected more than a thousand rejection letters.

Now, as I sat at my desk, I wondered if holding on to my dream was more painful than letting it go. Inexplicably the urge to pray came over me. Lord, if I’m meant to see my name in print again, please let me know. I need your guidance.

I still had a few minutes left before my lunch hour was over. I opened my backpack and pulled out the latest issue of Publishers Weekly. I flipped through the pages, when all at once I stopped on a full-page ad for a new book. I had to read the ad twice to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. The book was Girl in the Mirror. And the author? Mary Alice Monroe. Not me, of course, but there was my name, big and bold.

A week later, I submitted my second novel one more time. It was accepted! God Don’t Like Ugly sold like hotcakes.

That was more than two decades ago. I am now the New York Times best-selling author of more than 35 books, with my name big and bold on each one.
