A wrong turn, a missed sunrise and a moment of unexpected beauty

Who sets their alarm for 5 A.M. when they’re on vacation? I do. It’s my way of finding time to renew my spirit. On the last day of our family’s camping trip two summers ago, in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park, I got dressed in the snug confines of our RV, careful not to wake my husband, Dirk, or our young children, Evelyn and Tristan. Then I slipped out, closing the door quietly and jumping in the car. I drove out of our campsite, the headlights cutting a path through the early-morning darkness.

Our family loves to explore state and national parks. A few years back, I started a ritual during our travels. Every time we visit someplace new, I get up before everyone else to watch the sunrise. I choose the vantage point carefully so I can make the most of this special time, which is just between me and God. I’ve witnessed breathtaking sunrises at Zion, Bryce Canyon, Silver Lake and several other parks.

Today, however, felt different. Just the week before, the company where I worked had announced layoffs, and I’d had to say goodbye to three of the four members of my team. For nearly a decade, we had supported each other through multiple challenges—personal hardships, the pandemic and other difficulties. Those folks were far more than just my coworkers; they were family. The layoffs were sad and disquieting for all of us, and I yearned for a sunrise with God more than ever. I needed that comfort.

I’ve never been great with a compass, and I’d made sure to ask for directions from a park ranger the day before about where to go for the best morning view. But by now I’d been driving on this road for more than 20 minutes, and I was getting nervous. We were leaving the park later that day, so I had to time things right. I checked my watch. The sun was supposed to rise at 5:53, and it was already 5:40. What if I missed it?

Wait, there it is—the turn! I pulled in and got out of the car, glad to see I had the place to myself. The anticipation of the first glow was always so exciting. I couldn’t wait for the sun’s rays to burst over the Tetons and illuminate the sky with the soft pink and orange flush of dawn. Now I had to find exactly the right spot for the perfect view of both the winding Snake River and the snow-capped mountains. I paced in a clearing between patches of sagebrush and a gravel path. Finally, I found the best vantage point. I sat down on a flat rock and tried to relax enough to enjoy the spectacular scenery, the vibrant pink of the wild roses and the white flower clusters of the mountain ash. A pelican floated serenely across the water, but even that didn’t calm me.

I casually snapped a few pictures while I waited, when suddenly it hit me: There was plenty enough light to see the mountains clearly now, but I hadn’t glimpsed a single sunbeam. I looked at my watch. 5:58. The time for the sunrise had already come and gone. Oh no! I must have made a wrong turn! I was so disappointed with myself. I couldn’t even follow simple directions and face east! But then I realized my disappointment was in fact tinged with anger.

I raised my eyes to the cloudless sky. “God, you knew I needed this special time with you. Couldn’t you at least let me have that one small thing to comfort me?” I trudged back to the car. Nothing to see here, I thought. But before I turned the key in the ignition, I felt a strong urge to look at the photos I’d taken. Fine, I might as well waste some more time. It wasn’t as if Dirk and the kids would be up yet. I started to swipe through the photos, then stopped and stared at my phone, astonished. The pictures took my breath away. They were absolutely stunning. How could that be, when I’d been facing the wrong way?

In that moment, it dawned on me: I had been so upset about what I thought I was missing that I’d completely overlooked the incredible beauty right in front of me. In the photos, the water lay so still that the mountain’s reflection appeared like a flawless mirror, perfectly centered.

I jumped out of the car and rushed back to the same spot where I’d been sitting, only now I could see what was there, instead of what wasn’t. I stood in awe of the mountains’ majesty, the towering pines and blue spruces. My anger and disappointment vanished, and a feeling of peace stole over my heart. God was with me in this time of sadness, and eventually he would show me how he works all things together for good. I gazed out over the water. I thought I’d taken a wrong turn, but really I’d been led to exactly where I needed to be.
