My Own Way
My friend didn’t mean to hurt me,
but her words stung. Didn’t my prayers count too?

That Sunday afternoon, I stood in the foyer at church, making dinner plans with my friend Katie when another friend joined our conversation. She mentioned that her mom was having some health issues.
“I’m so sorry to hear that,” I said.
She nodded, then turned to Katie. “I know you’re a real prayer warrior. Can you pray for Mom?”
Katie said, “Of course.”
“Thank you! I hope you both have a great week!” our friend said, then walked away.
I felt myself tense but didn’t say anything. After Katie and I wrapped up our conversation, I drove home with one thought burning in my mind: Why doesn’t our friend see me as a prayer warrior too? I felt hurt by the slight.
I remembered the first time I heard the expression prayer warrior. I was in my early twenties at a church service, and the pastor had brought a woman onstage who was very ill. “I’m asking all of the prayer warriors in the congregation to step up and ask God for her healing,” he said.
Prayer warrior. Right away, I loved the idea. People who prayed unceasingly. Who told others they were praying for them and dedicated themselves to the power of prayer. I wanted to be one of those people. A prayer warrior.
Each morning, I sat down to read a short devotion or Bible passage. Then came uninterrupted prayer time. There was just one problem: No matter how hard I tried, my mind wandered. I’d get distracted by other things in my life. I couldn’t help it! I’d give up in frustration. What kind of prayer warrior did that?
My restless mind wasn’t a new problem. Even as a kid, I had trouble focusing. Whenever we had family movie nights, I was miserable sitting on the couch watching TV with nothing to do with my hands. One year, my parents bought me a Game Boy—a handheld video game console. During movie nights, I’d play with it nonstop. My parents teased me for not following the movie, but when I recited plot details and even some dialogue, they realized that the game occupied my hands so that my brain could focus. In other words, it was hard for me to do just one thing at once, let alone pray unceasingly.
So I adopted the practice of saying prayers on the go. While I was driving, cooking, washing dishes and folding laundry, I’d fit in a prayer. I never told anyone that’s how I prayed. What would they think? Would they judge me for not setting aside specific time to spend with God? For not being able to focus on one thing?
Was God judging me? When you love someone, you should want to spend quality time with them. I imagined how I would feel if every time I wanted to talk with my husband, he was doing something else at the same time. I would feel as though I weren’t important to him. Did God feel that way when I prayed while being busy? Like I had a Game Boy in my hands?
Those questions were still bothering me a few days later, when I volunteered to help serve dinner to our youth group at church. Some of the kids chatted with me as they were walking through the line. One of the boys told me he had a big math test coming up, another boy had a grandmother in the hospital, and two of the girls weren’t getting along.
I really need to dedicate special prayer time for this, I thought. If only I could pray like everyone else. Yet I knew my unsettled mind was my biggest enemy. Could I ever be a true prayer warrior?
That Thursday, I was babysitting my four-year-old granddaughter, Sawyer, while I was busy in the kitchen. I set her up to play in the living room, right near me. She walked in with a tray of pretend cookies and offered me one using her little spatula.
“Oh, thank you!” I said. “It’s too hot right now. Set it on the counter, and I’ll eat it when it cools.” I hoped she didn’t think I was blowing her off.
Instead, Sawyer headed back to the living room, seemingly delighted I was in on her game. Two minutes later, she was back to let me know the cookie was ready to eat.
I pretended to eat it, smacking my lips. “So good,” I said.
She smiled and set two more imaginary cookies on the counter. “I’ll come back when they’re cool, and you can eat them too,” she said.
I finished up in the kitchen and hurried to the living room to join her. I sat down on the couch just as Sawyer pulled her cookie tray out of the end table that she pretended was her oven. When she saw me, her face fell.
“Why did you come in here?” she asked. “I want to play the game where we’re both cooking.” She grabbed my hand and tried to pull me up.
“You want me to leave?” I asked.
“Yes!” she said. “Grandma, go back in the kitchen so we can play!”
Here I was, worried that I was ignoring my granddaughter by working in the kitchen, but to Sawyer, cooking and playing at the same time was fun. She didn’t need my undivided attention. She liked it when both of us were busy, when life was happening!
If there was overlap between work and play, could there also be overlap between work and prayer? Did God need me to separate my prayer life from just living my life in all its busyness? Or did he love me as he made me? With a brain that worked a little differently….
The next week, I was on youth group duty again, cooking this time. The meal would be a big pasta bar. I needed to get going with the prep. Bless the boy whose grandmother is in the hospital, I prayed, dicing the chicken. When I browned the sausage, I thought of the boy who had the important math test. Let him do well, Lord, I prayed. Then I asked God to smooth things over for the two girls who weren’t getting along—and for anyone else who needed prayers, for that matter.
That night, I set up the food, buffet-style. As the kids formed a line and filled their plates, I greeted them. I nodded to the boy with the sick grandma. He nodded and smiled back. That made me feel good. The two girls who had been bickering went through the line, giggling together.
“Hey, how was your test?” I said to the math boy.
His eyebrows shot up. “You remembered that I had a math test?”
I nodded.
“I think I did pretty well,” he said.
I grinned and high-fived him. “Prayer works, and so does studying,” I said.
“Ms. Diane, I have another big test soon,” he said. “Will you pray for me again?”
I felt a lump in my throat. “Absolutely,” I said. He’d asked me to pray for him because he knew he could count on me. It hit me like a sweet breeze. For the first time in my life, I felt like a real prayer warrior.
The next morning, I woke up with a full day in front of me. A million things to do. And plenty of chances to pray.
