A Train Ride to Remember

Thanks to Mom, my sister and I learned it’s the journey that matters,

not the destination

That night last October, I was struck with a sense of urgency that I couldn’t ignore. I called my sister Amy. “Are you busy this Saturday?” I asked.

“Why? You work Saturdays.”

“I’m taking the day off,” I said. “We have to take Mom on that train ride we promised her. And we have to do it right.”

I didn’t need to say what else I was thinking: How much time did our mom have left?

Earlier that day, Amy and I had gone to the oncologist with Mom. The news was devastating: stage IV lung cancer. Two years earlier, when Mom had pneumonia, her regular doctor ordered chest X-rays and saw a spot on her lung. He referred her to an oncologist for further testing, but Mom kept putting it off until she had terrible chest pain. Now the oncologist said the cancer had spread to her ribs, chest wall and lymph nodes. They could try chemotherapy, but there was no cure.

“I don’t want any treatment,” Mom said. “If God doesn’t heal me, I’m going to heaven. I’ll win either way.” Mom’s faith was unwavering. The best we could do was honor her wishes. Including her wish to go on one more train ride.

That was something she’d been talking about for the past couple years. “One day, I want to take the train out west and see Wyoming again,” she said. “I love that landscape! The mountains. Yellowstone. But mostly I just love trains.”

We hadn’t even known that about Mom until we were adults. She was too busy raising my four siblings and me as a single mom to talk much about herself while we were growing up. I’d found out only after I moved into my first home during my twenties. “Man, this place is small!” I said.

Mom laughed. “If you think this is small, try living in a train car.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I lived in a bunk car on a train until I was five,” she said. “My dad was a crane operator for Union Pacific Railroad.” She, her mom, and sister all lived on the train with him to save money, and they would sometimes invite her aunt and cousin to ride along. “Those years were the best of my childhood,” she said.

That’s why our family wanted to make the train ride to Wyoming happen for her. Every holiday, we’d sit down with our calendars and look for a time when all of us could take off a week of work, but there was never a time that worked for everyone, so we would table the discussion until the next family gathering. Before we knew it, a couple years had passed.

And now Mom had terminal cancer. I waited for my sister’s answer.

“You’re right,” Amy said, her voice cracking. “We can’t wait any longer.”

“Let’s just go, the three of us,” I said. “We can do something later with the rest of the family.”

“This week is crazy for me,” Amy said. “You’ll have to book the tickets.”

My heart sank.
