God’s Economy
First it was the furnace. Then the washer. The pickup’s tires. My computer.
How was I ever going to afford to replace them all?

The washer was dead. I studied its knobs and lights to see if there was anything I could do to coax it to life again. I’d loaded it with clothes, and water had filled it just fine. The machine made a couple half-hearted turns of the basket before giving up the ghost.
I gave the washer a shake. Turned a knob to a different setting. Nothing. I shook my head in dismay. I knew the washer was on its last legs, but I hadn’t expected to buy a new one this spring.
I got out my checkbook and sat down at the dining room table. I checked my bank balance. Okay, I could afford a new washing machine. But the timing couldn’t have been worse. I’d recently ordered a forced-air furnace for my farmhouse, replacing the one that had run in fits and starts over the winter. I’d have to pay for that once it was delivered. Which would leave precious little in reserve.
God will provide, I told myself. Little did I know my financial woes were just beginning.
I woke to a flat tire on my Jeep. I called my neighbor Tony, who has a tire-repair business. Tony came to my farm, took off the tire and whisked it away for repair. Turns out, it had a small bolt jammed into it.
A couple of days later, the same tire went flat again. “I think we should order a new tire,” I told Tony.
“Sure, we can do that,” he said. Once again, he came to the farm to retrieve the flat tire. Back in his shop, as he was about to remove the tire from the rim, he found that the problem came from a fence staple I’d run over, not from the leak he’d fixed originally. “I’ll fix this new leak,” he said, “and we can return the tire you ordered. That’ll save you some money.”
He hadn’t even returned with the newly repaired tire when I spotted a flat on my four-wheel-drive pickup. I inspected the pickup’s tires and found they all had cracks on the sidewalls. “We need to order four new tires for my pickup,” I told Tony, parsing out each word as if I’d have to pay for them too. These were heavy-duty, all-terrain tires, with a price tag that would nearly match the cost of a new washing machine.
I wrote a check to Tony, my worries rising. Father, I feel beset by trouble. As if you’re not protecting me. What’s your plan here? What should I do?
